Lesson 1: Greetings – Say “Hello” in Chinese

A: Nǐ Hǎo 你好!(Hello!)

B: Nǐ Hǎo 你好!(Hello!)

A: Nín Hǎo 您好!(Hello!)

B: Nín Hǎo 您好!(Hello!)

Language Notes:

In Chinese there are several different ways to say “Hello”. The most popular expression is Nǐ Hǎo. Nǐ means ‘you’. Hǎo means ‘good’. Together ‘you-good’: Nǐ Hǎo. Nǐ Hǎo can be used at any time, on any occasion and by anybody. It can be used on either a stranger or a person you’ve already known. It is similar to “hi” in English? For instance, when I say “Nǐ Hǎo”, you can respond with a “Nǐ Hǎo”.

Culture Tips:

You may have noticed earlier, some people say Nín Hǎo for Nǐ Hǎo. Well, Nǐ Hǎo is usually used between people of similar ages and social positions. If you meet some one senior to you, you say Nín Hǎo. Nín is the polite form of Nǐ. Thus Nín Hǎo is more formal and respectful.

The pronunciation of Nǐ is similar to that of the English word ‘knee’, and Hǎo similar to ‘how’.

That’s all for today! We plan to put on some online learning resources to help our students practise at home. You probably have already seen some video and animations about Chinese history and culture on our website. There will be more. In addition, we will also put on some dialogues in Chinese, so our students will have more material to use at home.

Hope you enjoy!
